MATH5825M Independent Learning and Skills Project
This module is not approved as an Elective
This module introduces and develops skills needed for the successful completion of a substantive project in mathematics. Such projects involve independently finding, synthesising, and communicating mathematical information and using it to solve problems. These skills will be practised in this module through coursework assignments culminating in a short mathematical project.
This module is intended to: (i) prepare students for their project by developing independent learning and research skills; (ii) improve employability through the development of oral and written communication skills with a particular focus on clearly communicating technical information. This will be done through a series of mini-assignments.
Subject specific learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Carry out a systematic search strategy to find material on a given topic.
2. Clearly communicate technical mathematical information both orally and in writing.
3. Use a systematic referencing convention.
4. Word process technical documents including mathematical notation.
5. Conduct reproduceable research and articulate ethical issues relating to that research.
6. Make appropriate use of generative AI tools in conducting academic study.
7. Conduct a short investigative project and communicate the results.
Skills learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
a) Complete a literature search.
b) Write technical documents including mathematical notation.
c) Give technical presentations.
d) Plan and carry out research independently.
e) Make appropriate use of technology in their study.
